The construction project Stuttgart 21 is an important component of the optimisation of the trans-European traffic network, which enables faster and more efficient railway connections between European towns. In connection with the important large project, LEONHARD WEISS was awarded the contract for sealing the skylights in the roof of the future main station Stuttgart. Planning and execution were carried out in close cooperation with our customer, the façade specialist seele, and with Deutsche Bahn. The objective was to perfectly adjust the sealing works to the building conditions: technically, economically and temporally.
The sealing works included a length of the construction site of about 500 metres and the use of approx. 30 t of grout, 8,000 m² of bituminous sheeting, 9,000 m² of liquid plastic material and 500 t of mastic asphalt.

Technical execution and challenges
The sealing of the skylight was carried out according to strict quality requirements. The bearing plates under the 23 regular skylights were grouted with flowing concrete and mortar under expert surveillance to reach a force-locked connection. A total of 46 plates was grouted.
For the sealing of the building all rising parts in reinforced concrete (about 9,000 m²) are sealed by means of liquid plastic material to reach durability. The difficulty resided in the sloped as well as bent form of the construction parts. The horizontal sealing (approx. 8,000 m² and approx. 500 t mastic asphalt) on the roof was produced by means of a build-up of bituminous sheeting and mastic asphalt.

Challenges and cooperation
A particularity of the sealing system is the elastomer joint tape, which connects the building shell and the skylights. In order to be able to carry out the works independently of the weather, air-conditioned protective tents were used, which enabled us to carry out the works also during winter without interruptions.
The services are technically challenging and are realised thanks to the use of high-quality materials and precise application technologies. In close exchange with the participants of the project, these are developed and optimised day by day. Continuous and self-critical monitoring of our own performance guarantees a quality standard which lies considerably above the standard of self-supervision.
