Aloft for a stable power supply

Modernisation of the overhead line Metternich – Erbach

Westnetz GmbH renovates the 110 kV high voltage overhead line between Metternich and Erbach. The new connection replaces the existing overhead line built on the same route in 1927. The age of the line and the optimisation of the network are the reasons for this project. The high voltage connection supplies eight transformer substations with electric power and thus ensures the power supply between Erbach and Metternich.

With the new construction, Westnetz invests into the security of supply in the region in the long term. Electric power from large wind farms and photovoltaic arrays is also fed into the high voltage network. Thanks to the new overhead line, Westnetz enables a further development of the power generation on the basis of renewable sources.

The new construction is erected in two parts: since 2024 the southern part of the connection between Erbach and Dörth is being built. The works will probably be terminated in summer 2026. Subsequently Westnetz will construct the northern part between Dörth and Metternich starting in summer 2026.

For the southern part, the teams of LEONARD WEISS carry out almost all works internally – part of which are road and steel construction, foundation formation, cable pull and recoating.

Southern part: numbers, data facts

  • Masts: 75 old masts (351 t) are replaced by 59 new masts (1.000 t).

  • Foundations: dismantling of sleeper and concrete foundations. Production of new foundation slabs, total volume 3500 m³ of concrete.

  • Cable works: dismantling of 38 kilometres of single wire Talacs 120/20 and 19 km of earth wire Al/St 95/15. New installation of 36.5 kilometres of twin conductor Al/St 265/35 and 19 km of fibre optic cable.

  • Road construction: 9,300 running metres

  • Working space: 47.608 qm

Particularities of the project

The renovation of the southern part of the high voltage overhead line Metternich – Erbach involves several particular challenges:

  • Crossing of the route with the motorway A61: this requires precise planning and a close coordination with authorities and all participants.

  • Parallel routing of high voltage lines: the route is situated between a 380 kV and another 110 kV high voltage line, which involves challenges due to induced voltage and working close to high voltage areas.

  • Narrow space: the works were carried out in a narrow space, which results in a particular complexity in the field of logistics.

Thanks to innovative planning and eco-friendly construction methods, we realise the southern part of the project sustainably with LEONHARD WEISS and contribute to a sustainable development of the region.
