In June 2023 LEONHARD WEISS OÜ, the largest subsidiary of LEONHARD WEISS, was awarded the contract for the construction of a railway overbridge on the same level as the crossing Tondi by the environmental and local authorities of the city of Tallin. The objective was to make the crossing of the railway safer and more efficient. The ambitious project was terminated on schedule.

A first in Estonia
From 21st to 29th October 2023 train traffic between the stations Balti and Tondi was stopped, in order to install two massive railway flyovers. These flyovers, each of which is 51 metres long and weighs 500 tons, were built next to the tracks and later shifted to their final position by means of hydraulic lifting jacks and Teflon coated rails. Thanks to this innovative method, the interruption of train traffic only lasted nine days – not comparable to the time it would have taken to build them directly on site, when the project would have required several months. The project marks a milestone in construction works, as such a big and heavy object had never been moved in one piece before in Estonia.

Numbers, data, facts
In connection with the project, the experts of LEONHARD WEISS OÜ installed two railway flyovers, each of which is 51 m long and weighs 500 t. These flyovers were shifted to their final position by means of hydraulic lifting jacks and Teflon coated rails. The dismantling of the old sleepers and concrete foundations, as well as the production of new foundation slabs included a total volume of 3,500 m³ of concrete. Furthermore, 38 kilometres of single wire and 19 km of earth wire were dismantled and replaced by 36.5 kilometres of twin conductor, as well as 19 km of fibre optic cable.
In the field of road construction, the teams constructed 9,300 running metres of new roads and 47,608 m² of working surfaces. The road construction works included the renovation of the Tondi road on about 300 m and the Kotka road between Tondi and Tedre. In addition to that, safe walkways, new ramps and stairs were built for a better access to the platform. During earthworks 38,000 m³ of material were moved, 14,000 m² of asphalt installed, 2,452 m² of which was red asphalt for cycling paths, and 4,500 m² paving works were carried out. The modernisation and the new construction of underground supply networks contribute to the improvement of the local infrastructure. In addition to that, over 5,000 seedlings and wildflower meadows were planted, in order to improve the urban climate and brighten up the townscape.

Particular challenges
- Crossing of the route: precise planning and coordination with authorities and all participants were required, in order to enable the crossing of the route with the motorway A61.
- Narrow construction site: the works were carried out on a narrow construction site, which represented special challenges in the field of logistics.
The innovative technologies used during the project enable us to install two massive flyovers with minimum interruption of railway traffic. This technical achievement required precise planning and coordination, in order to guarantee a smooth and safe execution of the works. This project proves our capacity and our commitment to offer high-quality infrastructure solutions.
