SuedLink – central project for the future of Germany’s power supply

Inside debeader

SuedLink is planned and built by the two transmission net operators TransnetBW GmbH and TenneT TSO GmbH together. TenneT is responsible for the northern section and the converters in Schleswig-Holstein and Bavaria, TransnetBW for the southern section and the converter in Baden-Wuerttemberg. The object is to safely transport wind-generated electric power from the north of Germany to the south of the country without much loss – over about 700 kilometres of modern underground cable technology. SuedLink is composed of two direct current transmission lines between Wilster and Bergrheinfeld/West, as well as Brunsbüttel and Großgartach (Leingarten), which are planned, built and operated simultaneously.

LEONHARD WEISS supports TransnetBW for the construction of individual sections of this trendsetting project as a reliable partner. With expertise, innovation, and high-quality building we participate in guaranteeing a stable, climate-friendly supply of electric power for future generations.

Section 9 – SuedLink from Großrinderfeld to Ahorn

LEONHARD WEISS has successfully taken part in the Europe-wide tendering for the contract sections in Baden-Wuerttemberg. The contract includes the construction of 40 km of empty ductwork route between the border of Bavaria and the border between the regions Main-Tauber and Neckar-Odenwald-Kreis. The construction works started in March 2024 with various preliminary works and will take approximately two years. During the works, two empty tubes for electric cables will be laid, as well as several empty tubes for control and communication lines.

Project information

Customer:
TransnetBW GmbH
Construction period:
2 years
Year of construction:
2024 – 2026
Involved divisions:
Road construction, network construction
Numbers, data, facts:
Open construction method: total length 34.22 km
13 HDD borings: total length 5.497 km
13 thrust borings: total length 0.573 km
3 micro-tunnels: total length 0,265 km

Incredibly exciting project – not only in view of the extent of the various works to be carried out and the special machines, but also the excellent and mentionable commitment of all colleagues, who achieved a large success hand in hand, like a swarm of bees.

section 7 - SuedLink between Schweinfurt and Mellrichtstadt

Contract section 7 includes the construction of 62.464 kilometres of empty ductwork route between the new converter station Bergrheinfeld (close to Schweinfurt) and Eußenhausen (border between Bavaria and Thueringen to the north of Mellrichtstadt). Construction works are under way since July 2025 with various preliminary works and will take about two and a half years. Just as for section 9, the empty tubes are being laid per cable trench, for the electric power cables, as well as several further empty tubes for control and communication lines.

section 7 - SuedLink between Schweinfurt and Mellrichtstadt

Customer:
TransnetBW GmbH
Construction period:
2,5 years
Year of construction:
2025 – 2028
Involved divisions:
Road construction, network construction
Numbers, data, facts:
Open construction method: total length 47.722 km
33 HDD borings: total length 13.331 km
14 thrust borings: total length 0.691 km
6 micro-tunnels: total length 0.720 km

Variety of construction methods are applied

In both sections the construction is carried out by means of a variety of construction methods. The main part of the routes is carried out in open construction method in open trenches. For crossings and underpasses, a closed construction method is applied. These parts are built either by means of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), (wash-) boring, micro-tunnelling or thrust boring.

Challenges of the project
Challenges of both project sections are the archaeologic measures involved in the construction project, the requirements resulting from working in a water protection area and the high requirements in the fields of soil and environmental protection.

An incredible challenge, to be able to contribute to the energy revolution in Germany and be part of it. To be in “uncharted waters” also makes it exciting during the execution of the project. Together with all colleagues we tackle this fascinating challenge with anticipation.
