Project details and scope
The construction period lasted from August to December 2024, while the main construction phase took place from August to October 2024. 6 to 8 workers were active in average, partly in 24-hour operation with day and night shifts. The works involved the conversion of approximately 1,900 m of track, as well as the installation of three points of the type 190 and two points of the type 300. The realisation was carried out in six construction phases, and the remaining works and the final tamping works under load were terminated in December 2024.

Particular challenges
The construction site presented several particularities, which included limitations for noise intensive works, which could only be carried out during the day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Certain areas were defined for the storage of materials, especially the used ballast excavation material during the dismantling of track 9. Due to the limited space, railway wagons needed to be used for the temporary storage, while material for the bicycle path was stored at the same site and track panels were being assembled. A further particularity was the exchange of material from concrete sleepers to steel sleepers, which had to be adjusted on site. During the conversion, the experts of LEONHARD WEISS were confronted with stonework, which was not to be deinstalled. Therefore, the ballast layer was too thin for concrete sleepers, and it was decided to switch to steel sleepers at very short notice. For their installation they needed to be transported to the construction site very rapidly.

Schedule and coordination
The construction works were carried out according to a tight schedule and during several time slots between August and October 2024. During the shutdown intervals, the track renovations and conversions of points were carried out respectively. The team had coordinated the works in such a way, that there were no interferences between the individual crafts control, communication, and safety system, superstructure welding and track construction. The carefully coordinated schedule was very important, in order to ideally use the time available.

Building efficiently and economically
On the occasion of an inspection on site, the experts recognised several possible savings: thanks to the alternative tender the renovation could be carried out at lower cost thanks to a reduced effort in the field of logistics and thanks to the space on railway wagons. Instead of the originally planned expensive material transport wagons, LEONHARD WEISS was also able to use a cheaper railway vehicle in agreement with the customer.
