New construction and renovation of track in inner-city local traffic

Due to the always increasing traffic pressure and environmental pollution in the areas of high population density, tramways as a modern, rapid and especially future oriented means of transport are becoming more and more important. The maintenance and expansion of track-bound traffic are therefore an ever growing concern for the urban authorities.

Aachener Stern – renovation of superstructure Aachener Str. Gürtel

Customer: Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe AG (KVB)

In connection with one of the largest inner-city construction projects and largest tramway crossings of KVB a total of 2,250 m² asphalt and concrete were demolished, 16 points, 590 m track and 490 sleepers renovated and backfilled with 380 t of track ballast and the subsequent asphalt works were carried out by Gleisbau Köln (Track Construction Cologne) during a 2-week shutdown.

Particularities of this project:

2 weeks pre-assembly and 1 week of subsequent work made the realisation of this project possible in the short shutdown interval.

Creation of the execution planning of traffic infrastructure, new construction of 3,515 m of track incl. sanding of new rails, as well as installation of 13 points, mounting of 3,200 m of cable duct, new construction of 2,000 m of deep drains, installation of combined anti-frost and base course, formation protection layer and production of base ballast bed on 25,250 m², excavation and reuse of 24,000 t of soil, laying of 27,000 m control, communication and safety system cables, production of track field lighting and point heating facility.
